So I had forgotten how safe it feels to have a reliable, well-functioning car. I hadn't realized just how deeply and constantly I was feeling fearful and powerless, likely at any moment to be left a single woman, likely alone, likely in the dark, vulnerable and abandoned somewhere.
Driving off the lot yesterday, I was thinking, "I could drive anywhere I wanted." Nashville, San Diego, Boston, into the woods, anywhere not here - I could just get in and go. As far away as I wanted. Away from it all.
And maybe I'd never have to come back.
